A really good cinematic experience that isn't a complete bore. \"The Purge: Anarchy\" is the first of The Purge films, and is set 2 years since the original movie, the date being New Year's Eve. It follows the story of Michael (Frank Grillo), formerly of the military, who is reunited with his old friend who is now one of 3 Purge Judges. During the Purge, they are assigned one year to kill any citizen who do not participate int the Purge, to protect citizens from themselves, hence the \"anarchy\". As more and more citizens are made exempt, Michael wonders about his purpose. The performances all over were fantastic and will stand the test of time, alongside the gore and horror of the scenes of blood-letting.
The Purge is brought to a whole new level, in spite of critics claiming it was an unwatchable journey. This movie is different from the original, not in a good way, but in a fairly different way. Many found a direct reference to The Purge left in the ending, but I didn't, it's more of a game of checkmate. Any scenes in this movie that stood out for me are - the ending which has a cringeworthy crescendo moment, the look of the guy shooting up in the bathroom, the steamy make out between Cali and Kyle, and the bloody Preston and Torrance as they converse. Otherwise it's decent. 6.5/10
Excellent, engrossing, tense and suspenseful movie that is inventive, surprising and well done. It's a action movie with a social lesson, so it's kind of like \"The Purge\" but it's not derivative at all, it's totally original and it makes sense. 7211a4ac4a
