Linear broadcasts will include select matches for the MLS regular season, Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, MLS Cup and Leagues Cup. Leagues Cup see MLS and LIGA MX pause their seasons each summer as 47 clubs compete in a World Cup-style tournament to crown a champion.

Subscriptions to MLS Season Pass start on February 1, 2023, featuring innovative programming and broadcasts. A selection of MLS and Leagues Cup matches, including some of the biggest playoff matchups, will also be available at no additional cost to Apple TV+ subscribers.

Continuing the sustained and substantial growth of both MLS and soccer in North America, the agreements will run through 2026, when the FIFA World Cup will be hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico. FOX Sports, TSN and RDS will also air broadcasts in the US and Canada for the FIFA World Cup in 2026.

MLS has a lengthy history with each of its linear partners, all of whom have played central roles in the continued rise of the league and sport. TelevisaUnivision is an original League partner from the inaugural 1996 season; TSN since 2011; and FOX Sports since 2015 (as well as from 2003 to 2011). RDS was previously a league partner from 2011 to 2017.

Opening weekend of the 18-week regular season will feature San Diego Legion hosting the Utah Warriors at Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday, February 18 at 7:00 PM ET on FS2. The Seattle Seawolves will host the New York Ironworkers at 9:30 PM ET on FS1.

The deal is a bit different than previous agreements. It stipulates Fox Sports will show an average of 34 regular season games annually, with 15 on the Fox network and the remaining inventory on the FS1. And those rights are essentially for simulcasts, since Apple TV already bought worldwide exclusive streaming rights for the next decade in a landmark $2.5-billion deal announced in June.

And there were signs that ESPN might have been preparing for an end to its relationship with the league. It seemed unwilling in recent years to devote much in the way of news coverage or promotional resources to its MLS telecasts. And the network had also lost other soccer properties in recent years, after it was the near-universal home for global soccer in the early part of the millennium.

The majority of soccer watchers in the United States over the next four years will be focused on one of three competitions: The Premier League, the UEFA Champions League, and Liga MX. Those rights are held by NBC Sports, CBS Sports and TelevisiaUnivision, respectively.

In fairness, TelevisiaUnivision has promoted MLS vigorously for years to an audience that prefers Liga MX, and with some success. But not enough, apparently, to come back to the table after acquiring exclusive Liga MX rights in the U.S. for the first time back in October.
