After the fall of France in June 1940 the British established a small, but well-trained and highly mobile, raiding and reconnaissance force known as the Commandos. They were party inspired by the mobile commandos of the Boer War (1899-1902).
In addition to their operational effectiveness, commando raids also played an important propaganda role. Churchill realised that in the early years of the war, when Britain stood alone, they were one of the few ways of striking back at the enemy.
Their next big mission, Operation Jubilee, was a test of the defences of the port of Dieppe on 19 August 1942. Around 5,000 men of the Canadian 2nd Division were joined by 1,075 British commandos, with naval and air support.
As the Second World War progressed, commandos were deployed in the role of assault troops. They played a key role during the D-Day landings in June 1944, where they destroyed gun batteries and seized bridges and other targets. They performed a similar role in the fighting in Sicily and Italy in 1943-45. And during the operations in Burma in 1943-45, commandos served with the Chindits and in the amphibious landings in the Arakan.
The evolving role of the commandos saw changes to the training programme at Achnacarry in 1943. It now focused more on the assault infantry role and less on raiding operations. Training now included how to work with larger battlefield formations and how to call for artillery, naval and air force fire support.
There were apparently additional instructions that the murders would be kept secret, the bodies buried in unmarked graves, and the fate of the captured commandos would not be revealed to the Red Cross or anyone else.
Clone commandos (CCs or RCs), also known as Republic commandos while serving under the Galactic Republic, were elite clone troopers that served in the Grand Army of the Republic's Special Operations Brigade during the Clone Wars. A result of the Kaminoans' genetic experimentation with the Jango Fett template, they were special forces soldiers noted for their training and elite status in the clone army. In 22 BBY, Clone Commander CT-411 "Ponds" gave command over five commando units to Jedi Master Mace Windu, who directed them to engage in a frontal assault against the Separatist Droid Army during the First Battle of Geonosis.
As the conflict between the Republic and Confederacy of Independent Systems swept across the galaxy, the commandos were organized into squads that supported the Republic war effort as an elite group within the Grand Army. One such team was Delta Squad; following the battle on Devaron, they reported directly to the High Council of the Jedi Order, informing them that no survivors were found at the massacre site. Foxtrot Group consisted of commandos led by Clone Captain CC-5576-39 "Gregor." They served with the 212th Attack Battalion until the Battle of Sarrish, where they were declared "missing in action."
In the latter days of the war, Clone Force 99 "Bad Batch" participated in the Battle of Anaxes, fighting alongside Jedi General Anakin Skywalker and the 501st Legion. Unlike the other clones, who were genetically identical with each other as well as their template, the Bad Batch commandos possessed various characteristics that set them apart from the rest of the clone army and even each other.
Prior to the Battle of Kashyyyk, the Wookiee[11] Chieftain[15] Tarfful was captured by Trandoshan slavers. These Trandoshans had made a deal with Count Dooku, but a group of clone commandos rescued Tarfful[11] from the slavers.[15] Meanwhile, the Bad Batch continued their one hundred percent success rate on missions, joining the fighting in the Conquest of Kaller before the execution of Order 66.[8]
Following the conclusion of the Clone Wars and the transition of the Republic into the Galactic Empire[6] in 19 BBY,[16] clone commandos continued to serve in the Imperial Military. Fifty commandos, including Captain CC-5576-39 "Gregor", were assigned to the Imperial Base on the planet Daro to train the first generation of non-clone Imperial stormtroopers, designated as TK troopers, which numbered 1,000 soldiers. The commandos trained the troopers, although Gregor did not teach them everything he knew. The TK troopers were provided with TK trooper armor and provided security for the base. Eventually, Captain Gregor grew disillusioned with the Galactic Empire and deserted one night, but was tracked through the forests of Daro by Imperial forces and was captured and imprisoned. Although captured, Gregor managed to activate a homing beacon for former clone officer Rex.[6]
A clone commando and his troops deduced their location, and moved in on the group at the exhaust vents. The commando and the stormtroopers fired on the Bad Batch as they waited for their ship, and the commando was hit by Wrecker who had arrived on the Marauder. As the rogue clones were escaping, the clone commando charged Sergeant Hunter and Echo, but was restrained. Managing to break free from the hold, the commando was hit multiple times by his own fellow troopers and fell down to the bottom of the mountain. Hunter was separated from the rest of the rogue clone group during the skirmish, and was captured by several clone commandos and multiple TK troopers. He was subsequently imprisoned and taken under Imperial custody.[6]
Later, a contingent of clone commandos,[5] the Imperial royal guard[17] with grey markings escorted the Kaminoan Chief Medical Scientist Nala Se to an Imperial headquarters on Weyland, where she was welcomed by the Imperial medical officer Scalder.[5] During her time with the Imperial Ninety-Seventh Stormtrooper Legion,[18] which began in 2 ABY,[19] Thara Nyende was told that her unit commander, SP-113 was one of the original clone commandos which had founded the Stormtrooper Corps. She became more convinced of the claim after 113 survived a detonation from close up[18] in 3 ABY.[20]
Clone commandos were equipped with Katarn-class Commando Armor, which came with a backpack where members kept various items like grenades and sabotage gear. They were allowed to choose the colors on their armor.[11] In combat the commandos utilized the DC-17m Interchangeable Weapon System and the DC-17 hand blaster,[2] though those at the Imperial Base on Daro like RC-1262 AKA Scorch used the DC-15A blaster carbines during the rise of the Galactic Empire. They had a small vibroblade in their right hand armor piece. Commandos could also use a grenade launcher.[21]
During the development of the clone army, the Kaminoans experimented with the genetics of the Jango Fett template in an attempt to create super soldiers. While the experiments bore few results, four of the test subjects came together to form Clone Force 99. Referring to themselves as the "Bad Batch," they used their "desirable" mutations, along with unorthodox tactics, to accomplish their objectives.[22] Members of Clone Force 99 had prefix "CT"[8] in contrast to the "CC" or "RC" used by other clone commandos.[23] The group was led by Clone Sergeant Hunter,[24] who was strong and stoic,[22] and had greater combat prowess than most.[24] Providing the team's muscle was "Wrecker,"[22] who was gifted extraordinary strength,[25] though he had a temper.[22] "Crosshair" was the squad's no-nonsense[26] marksman,[22] though he didn't like working with "regs," by which he meant unaltered clones.[26] Tech, while not physically imposing,[27] was a gifted strategist[22] and unmatched in the use of technology.[27] Though experimental, they were viewed to be extremely effective.[28] Following the battle for Anaxes, cyborg Clone Corporal CT-1409 "Echo" joined the squad.[14]
Delta Squad was a Republic commando squad that was dispatched to Devaron by the Jedi Council and recovered the bodies of Jedi Master Halsey and his Padawan Knox that had been killed there.[3] The squad was led by Clone Sergeant RC-1138 "Boss" and consisted of second-in-command RC-1140 "Fixer," RC-1207 "Sev," and RC-1262 "Scorch." Delta Squad participated in some of the war's most dangerous missions.[23]
Foxtrot Group, led by Clone Captain CC-5576-39 "Gregor", was an elite unit of clone commandos attached to the 212th Attack Battalion.[4]The unit was reported missing in action at the Battle of Sarrish. Captain Gregor was also reported missing after the Battle of Sarrish. But he later reappeared on Abafar with amnesia.[29]
Clone commandos were first mentioned in Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones indirectly during the Battle of Geonosis. The concept of clone commandos was introduced within the Star Wars Expanded Universe novel The Cestus Deception and the characters were later heavily featured in the game Star Wars: Republic Commando. Clone commandos were introduced into Star Wars canon through the Star Wars: The Clone Wars episode "Witches of the Mist."
They could be found on the outskirts of Sirte, Libya, supporting local militia fighters, and in Mukalla, Yemen, backing troops from the United Arab Emirates. At Saakow, a remote outpost in southern Somalia, they assisted local commandos in killing several members of the terror group al-Shabab. Around the cities of Jarabulus and Al-Rai in northern Syria, they partnered with both Turkish soldiers and Syrian militias, while also embedding with Kurdish YPG fighters and the Syrian Democratic Forces. Across the border in Iraq, still others joined the fight to liberate the city of Mosul. And in Afghanistan, they assisted indigenous forces in various missions, just as they have every year since 2001.
When WWII had finished most of the Commando units were disbanded but the remaining Royal Marines 3 Commando Brigade has continued to provide the thrust of British military action since. The F-S knife has remained a vital part of commando kit and has been carried by Commandos during the Suez crisis, the Falklands War, the Gulf War and the War in Afghanistan.
But a new technique developed at Cleveland Clinic is coming to the relief of the commando operation. Instead of replacing both infected valves, the technique replaces the aortic valve and repairs the mitral valve using tissue with a transplanted segment of donor heart aorta and mitral valve. 781b155fdc
